History Surrounds Guided Tours Through
Explore Austin’s history where it happened — at Wooldridge Square.
The History Surrounds augmented reality experience continues at Wooldridge Square in downtown Austin! As part of the official Historic Preservation event, docents are available to guide visitors through this unique, technology-powered exploration of Austin’s history, culture, and community.
Guided tours are available on Saturdays through November 2026, weather permitting. In general, a docent will be at Wooldridge Square between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Saturdays. Because docent availability and weather conditions can vary, we encourage visitors to contact us in advance to confirm a tour.

Discover Austin’s History All Around You
Using augmented reality, History Surrounds brings historical stories and people into the park around you. Visitors can explore the legacy of the historic Block 101 churches, learn about the Woman Suffrage Movement, and discover Austin’s musical heritage—including the story of artist Jim Franklin and the iconic armadillo imagery associated with Austin’s music culture.
Through community interviews, historical photographs, archival research, and immersive digital storytelling, the experience connects Austin’s past with the people and places that continue to shape the city today.
A Living Experience at Wooldridge Square
Although the official event and scheduled docent program extend through November 2026, History Surrounds is intended to remain at Wooldridge Square for the foreseeable future, with the hope of welcoming visitors for years to come. The project brings together historic preservation, community storytelling, and augmented reality to create a new way to experience the park’s history.
Whether you are an Austin resident, a history enthusiast, or a visitor exploring downtown, we invite you to experience the stories that surround you.
